Kay Morgan has been the editor for the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) for almost four years now. 

Why be part of the committee? 

Because I love the (voluntary) role, being part of the executive committee and the opportunity to encourage pharmacy technicians to share their stories, career journeys and projects. The editor role differs to other executive team roles as it’s tangible and produces a visible product on a regular basis throughout the year. The process of producing the Pharmacy Technician Journal (PTJ) fits well with skills many pharmacy technicians will have; attention to detail, an eye for accuracy and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people. 

How can you get involved? 

Ever thought the work you do could benefit someone else or help them start a similar system but don’t know how to tell others about it? The PTJ publishes articles from all sectors and from all levels of pharmacy staff. There is no need to have prior experience of writing articles or reports, we help potential authors by providing templates for submitting reports and have a set of interview questions as a prompt for our ‘Meet the Member’ feature. 

Some of the most interesting pieces have been members sharing their career journeys, being honest of failures as well as successes and providing tips on how you might progress your own practice. The PTJ, which is printed and posted to members, is seen as one of the key benefits of membership. A digital version is also available online via the APTUK website for PTPTs.

What’s next?

A ‘safety’ edition a few years back received very positive feedback and I would like to have a library of articles to allow us to theme future editions. I’d also like to encourage more content from across all the UK nations, from trainees and from some of the under-represented sectors e.g. community pharmacy and specialist sectors, for example mental health and secure premises. Regular features are written by the executive committee like the Branch Network pages and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion page. The edition that follows our conference is always a joy to work on. It is full of celebration and very uplifting. Content is focused on the great work going on and the fabulous skills pharmacy technicians have but often don’t shout about, and of course includes the APTUK award winners’ gallery.
